HighScope Trainer Recertification

Certified HighScope Trainers develop and maintain their skills by being more active than their peers. The HighScope Certified Trainer credential is in effect for a period of 3 years. To continue to grow and demonstrate commitment to quality, Certified Trainers maintain their certification by keeping abreast of new developments in the field, attending HighScope training events, conducting HighScope workshops or courses, sharing their knowledge of the HighScope Curriculum through presentations, and documenting their major achievements.

To apply for recertification, a trainer must

  • Complete anecdotal notes/evidence and scoring of a complete Program Quality Assessment (PQA). (Note: This requirement is currently waived for Infant-Toddler Certification.)
  • Provide a training agenda and complete a Trainer Self-Evaluation.
  • Provide a staff support narrative (a written documentation of the applicant’s staff support activities including scheduling or presenting workshops, conducting observation and feedback, assessing program quality, enabling other staff to attend professional development activities, and performing other training or support activities).
  • Complete a Professional Development Log. Each recertification candidate must complete 60 hours of formal training equivalent to 6 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

    This training should include:

    • A minimum of 40 hours offered by the HighScope Foundation, a HighScope Institute or a HighScope Teacher Training Center.
      • HighScope training, including workshops, HighScope’s International Conference and Regional Training Conferences, count as 6 hours per day (3 hours for half-days)
      • Reading the HighScope Extensions newsletter (6 hours/year)
    • The balance must be offered by an institution of higher learning or a professional training organization. These can include:
      • College courses and seminars
      • Conference workshops such as those offered by national or local AEYC, Head Start, state departments of education, local school districts, or other professional development organizations
  • Submit a certification application form, along with the supporting documents noted above, and a $65 processing fee to:
    HighScope Educational Services
    Attn: Certification
    600 N. River Street
    Ypsilanti, MI 48198
  • Recertification is required every 3 years to maintain certification status.

Recertification for Program Administrators and Other Non-Trainer Candidates

Often administrators will attend the Training of Trainers Course and achieve Trainer Certification so that they may better mentor their staffs. They usually do not conduct actual training sessions, so some of the requirements for recertification are somewhat different than those for trainers. In this case, they do not have to provide the first two items, namely anecdotes, training agendas, and self-evaluations.
