Building a community of active learners and critical thinkers
Visualize a place where children, their families, teachers, and administrators are all part of a collaborative community, a place where children are engaged thinkers and eager to learn. This vision can be a reality in a HighScope elementary classroom or school.
With the current research on learning, the development of Common Core State Standards, and the emphasis on 21st century competencies and teacher/school accountability, schools are in the process of transformation. HighScope’s active learning approach to elementary education is at the forefront of this positive change.
What does HighScope’s elementary learning design offer to students, teachers, and schools?
For students, HighScope offers a smooth transition from early childhood programs to kindergarten, support of their enthusiasm for learning that carries throughout the school years, and problem-solving skills that last for a lifetime of productive work, good citizenship, and meaningful relationships.
For teachers, HighScope offers a comprehensive professional development program. Active learning is for adults as well as students. Through onsite and online courses, coaching, and/or mentoring — customized to meet each set of needs — classroom teachers, specialists, and administrators learn how to implement all the components of HighScope’s elementary learning design.
For schools, HighScope contributes significantly toward building trust, horizontal and vertical collaboration, and emotional and instructional competence. By systematically identifying strengths and areas for improvement, HighScope works with schools to bring about dynamic and lasting change in elementary education.
