Elementary
A "BEST PRACTICES" approach for elementary SCHOOLS and classrooms
HighScope can help elementary educators teach more effectively — regardless of the curriculum they are using. Our work with teachers and school improvement teams focuses on research-based "best practices" that promote active, hands-on learning and a child-friendly school climate.

► HighScope's Ready School Assessment (RSA), is a planning tool that enables school achievement teams to evaluate whether their school is ready for all the children who come to it. It evaluates 8 dimensions of school readiness: Leaders and Leadership; Transitions; Teacher Supports; Engaging Environments; Effective Curricula; Family, School, and Community Partnerships; Respecting Diversity; and Assessing Progress. For more information visit the Ready School page in our Assessment section or the RSA product page in our online store.
HighScope offers services and products for elementary educators in the following areas:
- Ready School Assessment (RSA). This tool and related training can help schools become more ready for children. See the blue box and the links at right for more information.
- Classroom practices. We provide customized training to help teachers improve classroom practices in select areas. (Note: HighScope does not offer specific curricula for basic academic subjects such as reading, math, and science but instead focuses on HOW to teach using the existing curriculum.) For more information on training options or on the specific elements of our teaching approach, use the Related Training link at right or the Classroom Practices link at left.
- Movement and music. HighScope's Education Through Movement teaching model is the basis for a range of training services and products. Use the links at right for more information.
Effectiveness of HighScope's Elementary Work
HighScope has worked with elementary educators for more than 30 years in both public and private primary schools in a wide range of settings, including both urban and rural schools, schools on Indian reservations, and schools serving bilingual populations.
With HighScope's help, these schools have made progress documented in a number of studies. Program effectiveness was initially validated in the 1980s by the U.S. Department of Education/National Institute of Education Joint Dissemination and Review Panel. The educational approach was revalidated by the U.S. Department of Education's Program Effectiveness Panel. Data gathered include improvements in children's achievement test scores and literacy skills and teacher reports of improvements in children's abilities to solve problems, make decisions, and express themselves creatively.
