Lawrence J. Schweinhart Ph.D., Honored With Betty Garlick Lifetime Achievement
For Immediate Release
Lansing, Michigan – April 8, 2011 — The Michigan Association for the Education of Young Children (MiAEYC) is pleased to announce the awarding of the Betty Garlick Lifetime Achievement Award to Lawrence J. Schweinhart, Ph.D.
Recipients of the award demonstrate a commitment to Michigan’s children and families, and have made exceptional contributions to the early childhood profession. Dr. Schweinhart has dedicated his entire career to the betterment of young children’s lives.
Dr. Schweinhart, president of the High/Scope Educational Research Foundation, made early contributions to the early childhood filed by directing the HighScope Perry Preschool study that has followed a group of preschool children for over 40 years. The research has demonstrated the positive effects of a high quality preschool program on the lives of children. Later, as Director of the Foundation’s Research Division, he helped to insure that the results of the study influenced state and national policy makers’ decisions regarding investments in high quality programs for young children. As President of the Foundation, he has worked tirelessly to fund a replication of the Perry study to further determine its efficacy and its relevance to today’s children, families, communities, and businesses. In addition to his work at High/Scope, he serves the field in a number of roles. Most significant of these being a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the Michigan Association for the Education of Young Children, and the Early Childhood Investment Corporation.
Dr. Schweinhart’s desire and commitment to improving the education of young children, combined with his research and policy contributions over a lifetime, exemplifies the spirit of Betty Garlick.
The award is named for Betty Garlick, the first president of MiAEYC from 1974-1976, and honors her life-long commitment to young children and their families.
